Cursive Smursive

Ever look back at high school, junior high or elementary school and wonder why teachers put you through such pain and misery to learn things you would never use again? I remember sitting in Ms. Vernon's second grade class learning how to perfect the curvature of my cursive "L" and thinking to myself, "I just learned to write in print, and now I have to relearn how to write... are you kidding me?" More than anything, I remember stressing over learning cursive, trigonometry and geography... all to figure out by the time I got to through my core classes at U of A (Roll Tide) that I would never use those things again.

Today, I was sitting at my office desk typing away at the newsletter I work on every week, and "Ooh La La" by Rod Stewart came to mind. Naturally, I went to Lala.com and listened while proofing articles...

I wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger...

That is when it hit me... Here I am typing away at a newsletter... TYPING. Not writing in print or cursive (I mean for heaven's sake, they have a font for that). And, then there's the whole "Spelling and Grammar Check" option. Crazy! I mean, was second grade not a completely waste of time?

I'm not by any means saying that I think you shouldn't go to second grade, but I am saying... Would it have killed Ms. Vernon to tell me that there's a beautiful program out there called Microsoft Word that makes all this useless, so just enjoy your youth, do your best and don't worry your years away?

Oh well... too late now, but never too late for a little Rod Stewart.
