OOOOOOOOOOOOOpossum

Lately at the Dorminey home, we have had some fairly eventful evenings. Probably a good thing, considering my blogging was falling off due to the uneventful nature of our lives lately.

Last night, Monday night that is, I was getting ready to head to bed. I was getting the puppies all settled in and headed outside to make sure the cats had plenty of food and water for the night. I stepped outside to check on the food, when I noticed that Stone was having a problem getting to her food because one of my work shoes was in the way. I picked up my work shoe proceeded to place it back on the rail of the fence that divides our back deck -- there is a pretty side, as I like to call it, and the side that holds Jerrod's work and carpentry equipment, aka the "ugly" side. About time I heard a soft hisssssssss... I looked up to find a baby opossum about 2 inches from my hand and a foot from my face.

I had to have woke the neighbors because I let out the loudest scream. Jerrod came running outside. I thought I was about to die of a heart attack. While I am terrified of bugs, as mentioned in the prior post, I am not easily spooked by other creatures. Growing up in the country, I remember my dad telling me that if you ever come across one they usually freeze and play like they are dead. Well, that is exactly what this little guy did, we'll call him Stewart. Stewart froze. He froze so well in fact that I ran in got my camera and took several pictures of him.

Now would you believe that Stewart has a family? Oh yes he does! I also saw his beety-eyed sister, Stella. Now mind you, I had a run in with a big mama opossum back in May, where I stepped out the back door and there she was in front of me eating Coosa's food. Apparently, Jerrod and I not only have a family of two pups and two cats, but we also are providing nourishment for a family of opossums.
The thing that surprised me the most was Stone's complacent attitude towards the opossums. It was like she thought they were cats. She new Stewart was there the whole time. What can we say, even our animals are animal lovers!
